If you know Jeff Hiller, you probably know him from his sweet, soulful portrayal of Joel in the brilliant HBO show Somebody Somewhere. I loved Hiller in that show, so k was super excited to read his memoir. I have to say, it’s a delight.

Actress of a Certain Age is divided into segments which discuss various times in Hiller’s life - growing up gay in Texas, college, working as a social worker, working in improv, getting jobs in commercials, and more. Hiller pulls no punches when sharing stories from his life. I found him to be wonderfully self deprecating, humane, and charming. I truly enjoyed the section on Hiller’s time as a student in Namibia. I also loved stories from his time newly living in Nee York.

Particularly entertaining and rich for me was the section on getting the job on Somebody Somewhere, living with his co-stars, and filming the show. (If I didn’t say it before, the show is brilliant and you should watch it).

I highly recommend Actress of a Certain Age. Read it and let me know what you think - I’d love to discuss.

Funny, endearing, delightful. As expected. Love Joel, love Jeff.
