A nicely done second installment to this new series. Although this are shorter books Ms Rice packed quite a bit into this one. Toby's adventure in Angel Time was much shorter and different than the last but the addition of characters in Toby's real life has added to dimension to this story line. In addition I am intrigued by the addition of the demon character and Toby's doubts. Even in the presence of angels we can doubt the existence of God. I love how the spiritual angst and questioning plays out in Rice's books. Toby asks his guardian angel (another new relationship) whether he has coffee with the demon in his spare time, reminiscent of Rice's theme in Memnoch The Devil. I am pleased to see this series going in such interesting directions and that her stories of angels aren't going to be saccharine or sappy.

I was getting ready to settle in to a longer book series by Anne Rice, having never read her before. Learning I'd come to the end of this one after two books was a bummer because I did enjoy it.
My little gripe about both Songs of the Seraphim books was the brevity, but OF LOVE AND EVIL improved on its predecessor. The plot, the twists, and the antagonists were more satisfying. I liked the introduction of demons. It greatly increased the tension.
Too bad there will be no third installment.

While still a skilled writer, her story telling has lost its edge and waivers toward pedantic and didactic.

I just realized just how much I love Angel Time (the predecessor to this), because this was crap laying on top of a dead body. Of Love and Evil was way too preach-y and gave overtly holier-than-thou vibes.
Everyone (mostly men, because of course) cries and loves each other. I think Rice would be furious of me saying this, but I always felt it was on the verge of transforming into a BL novel. The laugh I got out of that is pretty much the only enjoyment I gained out of my reading experience.

Just love the concept...and love her writing. Ending was interesting and clearly there will be another book. Clearly shows the incredible persecution of the Jews in the Middle Ages. Old time Catholicism which is dated...wish she could have put a more Jesuit spin to it.

I picked this up in my local library when I saw it was Anne Rice and the premise sounded good; I didn't realise at the time that this is actually the second book in the series but no worries because the first story is mentioned multiple times throughout so I pretty much got the gest of it.
Although I didn't mind the story itself it is not a mark on Anne Rice's former novels such as The Life of the Mayfair Witches or The Vampire Chronicles. I found the main character Toby weepy and "too in touch" with his feelings. I find this very out of character for someone who used to be a hitman - yes I understand you can feel remorseful about previous actions and may seek solace from asking for forgiveness but please!
I wouldn't really go out of my way to read the first book or any more in the series as I don't think they're worth my time. If I had nothing else to read them possibly.

In my opinion, this book was too similar to the previous one...but I liked the story a bit more. The end is pretty open so I guess I'll have to wait and see what the third book is going to be like (if there'll be any, of course)
