The book is really an in depth exploration of two broken men and how they navigate the wartime environment. It is full of such beautiful, longing prose that goes deep into the characters and really makes them come alive. The characters are shockingly well realized, to a degree I've never quite read again, and the exploration of their flaws and tribulations is eye opening. In the end, you can't help but empathize with them, even though they are not good people in any stretch of the word.
