A LESSON not a book.
"
A nurse.
A blind girl.
A shoemaker.
A mysterious soldier.
A pregnant teen.
A delusional sociopath.
A wandering boy.
A devastating war.
A bitter winer.
Thousands of miles.
One ill-fated sea voyage.

Yes, it took me about 2 months to read this book but that is because I was trying to cram my 2018 reading challenge tasks in for those last 2 months so sadly, this book was an innocent bystander that was left ignored.

HOWEVER, I really did like this book. It's historical fiction set in Prussia during WWII. It alternates view points between 4 main characters. Some of these characters are refugees desperately trying to get out of the way of the advancing Russian army. The climatic event in this book is based on a real historical event with the ship Wilhelm Gustloff that most people don't know about.

(3.7) this book tells a historical moments of WWII with short chapters a and easily lovable characters. I do however wish the book spent more time into the incidents aftermath and had gotten me more attached to the characters. I love the books layout but it is also sadly forgettable. I don’t see my head remembering what happened anytime in the future

A beautifully written yet heartbreaking historical fiction that captured a part of WW2 I'd never learned about before. While I appreciate this book, I simultaneously struggled with the pacing and sadly never became fully invested in any of the MC's due to the storytelling format. Despite my personal reading struggles, this story is so important and the author's note perfectly sums up why:

History divided us, but through reading we can be united in story, study, and remembrance. Books join us together as a global reading community, but more important, a global human community striving to learn from the past.
