Slow to start and I found Valancy irritating at the beginning. By the end I was totally enthralled- very Secret Garden-esque. Reminded me of the kind of books I loved as a child.

One of Montgomery's most grown-up plots that almost could be categorized as a modern fairy tale. Valancy is a compelling main character and the start of her story is as poignant as the end is triumphant.

I've loved L. M. Montgomery since I read the Anne and Emily series as a kid. My mom got this book for Christmas and let me borrow it.

First, I have to say I can relate to the main character a lot. Unmarried and unhappy definitely rings some familiar bells with me. I also liked L. M.'s not-so-subtle commentary about the hypocrisy of people and how they care more about image than in actually acting out their Christian faith. It's sad to see that a lot of the stuff her family argued about or said about her and others felt very timeless.

I am a little disappointed in Barney's reveal. I thought the story was doing very well until that point. To me, it felt like it took a lot of the message out. Or maybe it was illustrating hypocrisy again, I don't know. I did enjoy the rest of it, especially showing how much happier Valancy was once she was free from the oppressive expectations of her family and all the descriptions of Canada. It's always been obvious that L. M. was a huge nature lover, and this book really showcases that. It makes me want to visit Canada!

I know i wouldn't have related to this book the same way had I read it as a teen, so I'm glad that this is my first experience with it. Anne and Emily will always be the girls in my childhood, but Valancy is the woman of my adulthood and I hope I can find my blue castle some day, too.

Cozy and charming, like a big hug.
