Just finished this book and loved it-- one thing is still bothering me, though. There's a guy that Lulu finds in the woods, toward the end, and he's wearing an "old red scarf for a pants belt". I could swear that someone had been wearing a red scarf for a belt earlier in the novel, but I can't for the life of me figure out who. I thought it was one of the Lazarres, maybe? Anybody else spot that?

Each chapter of this book captures vignettes between two families over the course of several decades. I liked how Erdrich was able to make the narrator of each chapter have such a distinctive voice, even as they transitioned into older age at later points in the book.

Not my favorite Erdrich book but still pretty good. Basically a collection of short stories that relate to one another because of family lines. I would have liked more of a plot structure but Erdrich’s mystical and raw writing somewhat made up for it.

I loved this sort of family saga, focusing on two interlinked families (or step-families) born of the same man who loved two women. I found it rich, interesting, beautifully written and it has all the ingredients I love in everything else I have read by Louise Erdrich, although it took me a while to get my head around the many characters.
