This was more of a life journey narrative than a typical tropy romance. Max is severely scarred by a horrendous event in her childhood. Her journey is one of growing up and in the process learning what she needs to change about herself in order to heal so that she can live a full and healthy life.

Overall, I liked the progression and the writing. I found the trans character (a friend) well rendered. The ending was mildly disappointing: It felt rushed, unthought out and out of sync with the rest of the novel, almost fairytale-like.

This novel is a bit reminiscent of [b:Finding the Grain|17675102|Finding the Grain|Wynn Malone|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1364864646l/17675102._SY75_.jpg|24678837] (which I loved). Folks who enjoy this type of life journey, coming-of-age story spanning a number of years and featuring a butch protagonist may enjoy this book.

I really enjoyed this. Max is such a warm-hearted and relatable protagonist and her development is naturalistic and engaging to follow, from high school to a truck driving career as an adult. I appreciate when a book has nuanced and well fleshed-out characterization for all the characters and this one absolutely delivers. Very impressed, although I would have liked a bit of a different conclusion with Daphne at the end, and would definitely read more from Morrison.
