The Dreghorn family, many of whom hadn't seen each other for a decade, gather for a Christmas reunion in England's Lake District. When a man dies, apparently accidentally, his wife sends for her godfather, Henry Rathbone, to try to figure out what happened.

Loved this second book in the Christmas Stories mysteries. This mystery involves Sir Oliver Rathbone's father Henry. In this story, Henry is spending Christmas with his godchild. When he arrives, he finds that her husband has been murdered and has the onerous task of informing each of the siblings as they arrive from various parts of the globe. As he delves further into the mystery of the murder, he finds that all is not as it seems and that a decade old land case may play a role in the death of his friend.

Fans of the William Monk series will appreciate this novella. I enjoyed listening to the audiobook version. Look forward to reading the next Christmas mystery.

Henry Rathbone (Sir Oliver's father in the Monk series) solves a mystery. Quite unrealistic ending though.

This old-fashioned Christmas mystery is a cross between Agatha Christie and Elizabeth Gaskell. A lovely, light winter read

A bittersweet story, about making hard decisions and doing what is right. Different than what I expected from the title and cover image, which made me expect something lighter and a little more drenched in the seasonal delights. Instead, it was quite a sad tale, and the mystery aspect all seemed to happen off-screen.

A sad meditation, but well done.

I loved the descriptive imagery of the wild beauty of the land, but the narrative was a bit dry. The plot was obvious, and the ending felt a little abrupt and too neatly packaged. Not unenjoyable, but not my favorite, either.
