just loved this, the writing was unlike anything i’ve read before, mixing autobiographical with realistic fantasy

fast paced and very good at dealing in hard-hitting metaphor— wish we’d gotten more of the history of the setting and a little more fleshed-out ensemble cast but i liked the magical realism aspects a lot and the mc’s character development is shown well

This was a fast and pleasant read. The writing was poetic in a way that was beautiful and inspiring to me, rather than sounding pretentious or melodramatic (as I often find poetry). The story was very simple and didn't change my life, but I still enjoyed the book and the practice envisioning a magical world and a better world. I think this book could have been improved with a little more depth and tying in of loose strings: for example, I never understood why "Notorious Liars" is in the title, as there weren't really any characters who were notorious liars (unless the book, being a fictional memoir, is the lie and the author is the liar?); for another, all the character's problems went away after making a magical cake - I think there could have been more actual relationship repairing, self-examination, etc.
