Set in 1878, Tessa Gray travels to London in search of her missing brother. When she gets there she finds not all is what it seems and is dragged into the world of demons, magic, and the supernatural. When she meets two Shadowhunter boys, Will & Jem, she starts to realize she might have more to do with this world than she thought.

As the first book in The Infernal Devices trilogy, this was my next read in my Shadowhunters journey! I was a little nervous at first because I don't usually like a lot of historical fiction, but I should have known that the Shadowhunters would reel me in nonetheless. I immediately felt like I knew and liked the characters for the most part. It's probably because they felt like a one-to-one comparison to Clary, Jace, Alec, and Izzy from The Mortal Instruments. That is more than okay with me, however, especially getting into the first book of a trilogy. I thought that the villain/threat of this book was pretty interesting and a bit of a departure for the Shadowhunter world. I'm here for this love triangle as per usual, and am excited to see where it goes. Tessa has great chemistry with both of these boys, though obviously, I have a favorite. I struggled with Will's personality and actions throughout the book, but it's obvious that this is set up for a series arc so we shall see how he progresses.

Maybe this is minutia that only I care about, but I will never not be amused by how Cassandra Clare names things in these books. While she doesn't mention my favorite name, "Jonathan Shadowhunter", in this book, that does not stop her in other respects! Henry, the inventor of the group, creates a tool to sense demonic energy and says something along the lines of "I've created this tool to sense demonic energy. I shall call it a Sensor". It is always silly and I always love it.

I'm really enjoying everything about this series and am excited to continue.

Sooo good! I loved all the callbacks to the Mortal Instruments series, and I loved being immersed in the world of the Shadowhunters again. Tessa’s story is so interesting and exciting in and of itself though, and I loved the new characters and different storylines. Very intriguing and so many good twists and turns!

When I first read this it was a five star (like a lot of stuff I first read was), but upon reread it is a four. I enjoy that I am getting more of the story by reading the books the way that Cassandra Clare recommends I do still have dislikes. I really enjoy the look back at different generations of Shadowhunters and a look into Magnus' relationship with Camille and kind of why he didn't like shadowhunters, other than being a warlock.

My heart broke for Sophie when she saw Agatha killed in front of her and then learning that Thomas was also killed. I think she had feelings for Thomas, but said that she didn't because of what happened with Will.
