Well, what a ride! I think this is one of the angstiest stories I've ever read, and the conclusion was wonderful (and full of plot twists, as usual). I'm very happy we didn't get any smut in this volume; that's what I feared the most. The cover and illustrations were gorgeous. My only regret is the lack of fluff, even the extra was a mission :( Yuwu was still an incredible experience, with so much depth and emotion. Gu Mang deserves the world.

God, Meatbun just knows how to hurt my feelings in the best ways. I was already crying like two or three chapters in.

I really enjoyed the conclusion! It amazes me that even seven books in, there were still mysteries we were uncovering. I wasn’t a huge fan of
Mengze revealing themself as a man in disguise… we so rarely see powerful women in danmei. I was so hoping to see them on the throne at the end in their own right. There was no real plot line that made such a reveal important to the story. It just felt like an unnecessary afterthought.

I was surprised that the extras weren’t little vignettes but a little AU story. I think I might have preferred vignettes, but the story was cute anyway.

Overall, I really enjoyed how the main story wrapped up—these characters are wonderful and their relationships just really made the entire story. I’m sad to read that Meatbun wasn’t totally satisfied with the end result. I can see areas where her ideas weren’t fully realized (due to stress and time constraints), but she does such a wonderful job of keeping to her overarching themes, and keeping her characters lovable. And that’s what I stay for, you know?

I enjoyed the series overall, Gu Mang and Mo Xi are great together, but I have some mixed feelings on the conclusion.

I especially hated the Mengze twist. It would’ve been so powerful if a woman ended up on the throne in the end, showing that class/gender/etc truly no longer matters in this new era. Meatbun is a great writer but I generally really dislike how she writes (or fails to write) women.

I also still don’t like Murong Lian, actually even more after reading the extras.
Gu Mang clearly could’ve had a happier life if Murong Lian didn’t bully him so much. I get that he was also abused and had some growth, but why does Gu Mang’s abuser have to be forgiven and included in their happy ending? Gu Mang and Mo Xi deserve better.
