If you like Harry Potter, you will like this story...

At first, I thought the book was slow and pretty boring. I was initially going to give this book a 2 star, but then towards the ending it got interesting! (Which, side note, I am convinced that books in a series do this as a marketing gig for you to buy the second book) This, as you noticed, was enough to give it another star
While the plotline of the story was interesting, this story did a good job in world building and character writing. All of the characters were unique which I adore! (Even if I wanted to strangle some of the characters) and the world building was similar to Percy Jackson in a way, where there is this separate area away from ordinary humans.
Speaking of, it has a magical school which makes the book similar to Harry Potter, especially since one of the teachers was suspiciously like Professor Snape.

However, I just found the beginning of the book too slow, and I always was checking when the chapter would end. Which is never usually s good sign for me, but that changed TOWARDS THE END OF THE DARN BOOK

Would I recommend it? Maybe, maybe not. Would I read it again? Not in like...20 years but I don't think it wasted my time all that much.

This book and series are perfect for fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, or really any middle-grade series about a special child who discovers they have magical powers and belong to a magical world that is incredibly different to the human world in which they grew up. Sophie Foster is a great lens through which we learn about the Elven world. And there is also a magical school involved filled with silly quirks and magical elements, which in this world aren't really magic at all, they are just part of reality. We watch Sophie struggle to navigate life as the new kid in school, where the only new kids are usually just the incoming first-year students, after leaving her family and everything she knew behind. Sometimes the book could get very exposition-heavy, but that's usually something I forgive in a first book. It is quick, silly, magical, and a great start to a series!

Keeper of the Lost Cities is a captivating adventure following Sophie, who has had the ability to read minds ever since an accident when she was five, and her discovery of her true identity, where she really came from, and why she's never felt like she fit in. The twists and turns made this book hard to put down, and the emotional heart of it endeared me to all of the characters and their quirks.
