I am not entirely sure how I feel about this book. I didn't love it, and I didn't hate it, so I gave it 3 stars. It's a very interesting, crazy weird, idea that I have no clue how someone even thinks up. It's ridiculous. But...at the end, I'm not entirely sure what actually happened. Seriously.
I am speechless, and yet have so much to say. Read this outside, like I did. Read this and listen to unusual music, or soundtracks for films that venture to truly alien landscapes. Read this punctuated with coffee or alcohol, just enough to alter you slightly.
I don’t think I’m prepared to talk about this book (these books) yet, but I can tell you it was absolutely perfect.

Wow. Talk about horrendous writing. How can you write a book centered around a scientist (biology) and have zero knowledge of the center of focus yourself?
*mild spoilers below*
The author makes classic mistakes (poisonous vs venomous snakes) as well as simple fixes that require only the most basic knowledge or quick search to figure out (brackish water IS NOT generally dirty water, it's a mix of salty/fresh water. That whole tangent about the "brackish" pool made zero sense). Not to mention the classic tropes male writers make with female characters (you're telling me she immediately slept with her "husband" after KNOWING it wasn't him? And not once, but TWICE after she confirms the person is not the man she married?? What???) (I don't know how to write women, so the main character is going to be quiet, emotionless, and distant. The author hilariously makes his main character have tons of classic autistic traits by accident because he can't write women/i.e. Women scientist must be autistic trope).
Not to mention the poor control over his own story when he clearly didn't know how to tie pieces together, like the whole hypnotism bit. Don't know how to make characters work together? Just hypnotize them so they're forced to. Training? What's that? Just hypnotize people so they work together/stay calm/don't argue/don't panic etc. Oh, and the main character? Yeah, she's immune to hypnosis because of some fungal spores. HUH? How do those two things relate AT ALL?
The *idea* if this book is so cool, but the actual writing is so poor that I couldn't continue. It has to be one of the extremely rare occasions where the movie adaptation (at least of Book 1) is better than the original content.
