This book began in a way that I thought I knew exactly where it was going to go but flipped so I could’ve never predicted what would happen. When you intake so much horror it can all start to feel similar and I’m impressed with what this story accomplished. I was drawn in by the POV of a cat but enjoyed this read more than I could’ve ever anticipated.

Genuinely the first TikTok recommendation I’ve enjoyed.

I read sundial first and really enjoyed the writing and went into this one hoping for the same and was excited. I found this one to be hard to get into initially and I found the "plot twist" to be shown incredibly early on. If you're not someone who reads a lot of thrillers, I think you'll enjoy this book a lot more than someone who does. I will read other books by this author but this wasn't my favorite which sucks because the cover is so stunning!
I personally find myself to be someone who is incredibly tired of mental illness being the plot twist in all these thriller/horror books. This is nothing against Catriona Ward, I really enjoy her writing and her premises but I found this book specifically to start a lot of threads it doesn't finish and that it was exploitative in its handling of mental illness. The character is portrayed as violent, murderous and unhinged for 90% of the books and then the afterword says people with this condition are misunderstood and badly portrayed in media. 🤷‍♀️

Ho-ly shit, guys, I don’t know where to start with this one. It’s very hard to know what to say about this book–even the genre–without getting into spoilers. So let’s just say that there’s a very strange man that lives in kind of a sad house with his cantankerous daughter and a Bible-reading cat. And a new next door neighbor whose little sister disappeared at a nearby lake 11 years ago. And…nothing is exactly what it seems. I am often disappointed when books advertise “so many twists and turns!!” because a lot of times you can see the “twists” coming a mile away. That…was not the case here. It’s hard to get into content warnings without spoilers, but let’s just say it is quite dark in places and I can absolutely see how some people would nope out pretty quickly. But it’s all done in the service of a really rich and earnest story and not shock value.
