While I enjoyed the cultural aspect of this book (having grown up with expats myself in Southeast Asia) and many of the depictions of what life is like as an expat, the plot itself is a bit slow for me. I skimmed through many of the chapters just to get to the end. The concept is interesting but execution could be better.

Personally, I like Dara and the trajectory of her character. I wasn’t convinced with the progression of Lillian and Amaka - the development of these two characters were kind of abrupt in how things unfolded for them.

I don’t think this book is for me but I think someone who enjoys a slow-pacing plot would appreciate it more.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed reading this book, which was easy to read even as it dealt with so many diverse relationship dynamics! I liked the characters maybe Lami less so much as I empathized with her, and it was fun to find I could relate to their life/ work experiences. Looking forward to Ms Fadipe's next book!

I wanted to love this so much more. This book was all over the place.

Ended up skimming through to the end. Remained bored.

An interesting portrayal of a community that I do not know anything thing about - enjoyed the plot as a summer read type of book

Reading about the same archetypes in fiction about women is super annoying, so this was a really delightful change. Each of the characters is an ex-pat living in Singapore, coming to terms with what this means as a woman with African roots. The writing is great and realistic, the backgrounds lush and exciting. I would love to see this made into a movie. I enjoyed this one!

I really liked this one. The cover drew me in but I stayed for the characters.
emotional lighthearted fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Normally I do like a character heavy/focused story where they are flawed and there’s growth at the end. However maybe it was because I didn’t connect or liked the characters in this book that much? But I found that this dragged on with too many details, like a soap opera with no real point. I almost DNF’d this and kept skimming/speed reading through many parts just to get through it

So. Much. Drama.  I think I would have enjoyed this more as a summertime read.  Listening to it the first full week of returning to school just gave me anxiety! But, it was interesting to hear about life in Singapore and I was invested in the characters' lives.
