I was in the mood for a dramatic read, and this was! I enjoyed reading about 3 women of Nigerian heritage living in Singapore because that’s a perspective I’ve never read about before. I thought the author’s writing style was interesting, and the perspective of each woman was well done. Some of the drama didn’t quite work for me, and I wish the book would have been a bit longer to better dive into the women because it felt a bit shallow at times when it was supposed to be deep. This was a fun read for me personally, and I would check out future work by the author!

I found the characters quite compelling, and enjoyed how each of the 3 were developed.

My heart broke for each of them at various parents; families can be such a mixed bag of support, tension, trust, distrust and love.

The Singapore setting, with most of the people featured from Nigeria or of Nigerian background was quite interesting. The scenes at airports and elsewhere where Nigerians are being discriminated against were realistically shown.

I found each character's resolution satisfying, and I think this book will stick with me.

While this may not be the best book ever, it really held my attention because I was here for all the drama. A great beach read.

I picked this up because I love Singapore and thought it sounded interesting to follow the lives of three Nigerian women living in Singapore.
While I think there are some really interesting cultural observations here, I’m not sure this will stay with me. It’s largely character driven but I found it difficult to really invest in any of the stories. Really, there is a drama with very little emotional impact despite heavy themes. The differing points of view were distinct in their details but not voice, which also made connecting with the characters difficult.
Overall this was fine but not super memorable.

Enjoyed the book's setting but found it a bit dull at times. Characters were well-developed and I'd read more from this author! Liked the idea of listing their book club picks.

This was an okay book literally kept reading for the drama. The novel follows the friendship between three women struggling to redefine themselves and make decisions that could alter their livelihoods. I expected a little more from the mysterious stranger that caused an uproar within the friendship of Dara, Amaka, and Lillian. But Lani wasn’t really the main focus of their conversations. His role in everything was rather small in my opinion.

Dara was a lawyer and Lani was a new partner at the firm. With his arrival Dara immediately hates him and feels as though he’s a threat to her future position at the company.

Amaka was a banker with a shopping addiction and on the verge of going broke. Her addiction arose from the fact she grew up without a present father. According to her mother, “Chuckwu’s money must have been like his love: too slippery to be held down or counted on.” She was also secretly having sex with Lani behind Dara’s back knowing how she felt about him. Amaka tends to chase after unavailable men that remind her of her father. Could be why she went after Lani.

Lillian was a former pianist turned “trailing spouse” from the U.S. who moved to Singapore with her spouse hoping to start over fresh. Instead her marriage is in shambles and ends in divorce. Her husband moved on to another woman faster than P-Diddy did with Making the Band. Then she had this weird obsession with thinking Lani was her father reincarnated. I slick thought she was crazy but it all made sense in the end.

Overall, it was meh a little to drama-filled and never got to the core of the novel. We get a lot of backstory on the main characters and while they all had distinct personalities they still lacked depth. I’m not really sure where the author intended to go with the novel but I was entertained for the most part. Special thanks to @grandcentralpub for my finished copy & @librofm for my ALC!!!
