Oh how I enjoyed reading about the lives of Dara, Lillian, and Amaka - three Nigerian black women who lived in Singapore
Thank you to Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for my eARC. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
This was an interesting and captivating read. I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but this one didn't disappoint.
There were quite a few characters and settings that at first made it confusing to keep track of. I enjoy stories that are told in multiple POVs, which this one did, so that worked for me.
I liked the descriptions and the themes that are woven throughout, as well as the exploration of female friendship dynamics and what happens to these friendships when outside factors are introduced.
3.5/5

This was a fun, summer read that I really enjoyed! It’s about Black British, American and Nigerian expats living in Singapore. I thought it was funny throughout and I loved the petty drama! As an expat currently living in a concrete jungle, this book has me lusting for the island life!
Not as much fun lawyering as I expected, but a good spin on the China Rich Girlfriend genre that questions Asian attitudes toward Africa. I learned a fair amount I didn't know about Nigerian culture and a little bit about Singapore.

Very unique setting - high-powered Nigerian women in Singapore. Loved that it highlighted a different experience in an unfamiliar-to-me setting for WOC. Each of the main three women had an interesting (back)story, and yet it also felt like nothing happened. I enjoyed it, but am also likely to forget everything other than the overarching concept/ setting.

I wanted to like this one, but I just didn't. The prose was fine except that it was sooooooo long. I wonder if the same story could have been told in less words for all that happened. Again, there was a large infidelity plotline which I didn't love. Additionally, and this may be a product of the narration, but everything revolved around Lani who I just didn't really find appealing or charming. Too long; not for me.
