This was a pretty slow read to start, but ended up being very enjoyable. I cannot wait to start the next one asap :)

A fast-paced story where the narrator is unreliable! After you read it once you want to reread it so all the puzzle pieces fall into place!

An interesting start, although I haven't gotten very far yet.

Okay, I finished this late last night. It's a strange little book. I'm not sure how smoothly the first person narrative was executed, and I'm quite certain I want to reread it with the ending in mind. At any rate, I liked it enough to want to try the rest of the series.

Enjoyable and clever young adult fantasy. The creative use of Greek mythology is excellent, though I could've done with fewer myths retold around the campfire. I also loved how Turner subverts several fantasy novel cliches, as with the magus who initially comes off as a stereotypical villain, but who turns out to be genuinely intelligent and whose "wicked" plans are less evil for evil's sake than they are the result of a high, but not improbably excessive, degree of ambition.

The writing was kind of weak, none of the characters appealed to me much, and the author kept some things that the viewpoint character knew from the reader. I hate that. It wasn't so bad as to make me stop reading or throw it across the room, but I probably will utterly forget I read this book in a year or two. Considering it's a Newbery Honor book and has such high ratings here, though, I wonder if I'm missing something.

I liked it, but I didn't love it. I didn't really connect with any of the characters, even Gen. I'd try reading another in the series, though.

Why? Simple, during more than just the first half of the book, barely anything went down. More than half of the book consisted on the character's travels across the land and finding out more about the world I was reading in itself. Thus, I wasn't very much inspired to pick the book up. It was only around the time of the theft that I took a lot of interest in the book, but even then, I was mostly unmotivated and the scenes that I enjoyed the most ended quickly.
The ending gives away quite obviously that there is a sequel, but I certainly did not enjoy the feeling of having read around 300 pages just for the last 20 that felt more relevant.
It was an Ok book. Not great, simply Ok.

Also, first book of the #WitchAThon

Gen is one of my favorite heroes of all time! He is extraordinarily clever as the top spy of Eddis, and he has met his match in the Queen of Attolia! This is the sequel to The Thief which I would read first as Gen is wonderful in it, but this is the romantic part of the series.
