This is just a classic example of an anthology having uneven quality due to its own size. I love some of these stories, "Farmer Giles of Ham" reawakened my inner child, and "Leaf by Niggle" is one of my favourite short stories of all time. "Smith of Wotton Major" was great mostly at the beginning and at the end, which strangely enough, were the least magical parts of the tale too. This is a great anthology, and proof enough that Tolkien was more than just LOTR.
But it also includes "Roverandom" and those Bombadil poems I honestly didn't care about, and at times irritated me. Still, worth giving a try.

BBC did a great job of acting these stories out. Plus, Brian Blessed has always been one of my favorite British actors.
3.25 STARS
This was fun but some parts bugged me enough so that I cannot in good conscience give this more than the 3.25 stars I rated it. I might go back to this again sooner or later but I might not and I'd be fine with that.
I read Roverandum for a class at uni, so I definitely have most thoughts on that. I hate Artaxerxes and the Man in the Moon so much, what a bunch of arrogant bastards. The story actually made me want to throw the book at multiple times. Like when the Man in the Moon tells Rover "Oh, my dog is already called Rover so I guess I'll have to change your name" which Rover does not like but eventually resigns himself to his fate. NO. The only saving grace in this, besides the admittedly fun adventure, was Psamathos Psamathides, I loved his vibe. (But also the Man in the Moon saying he will not pronounce the Ps in the other wizard's name because he feels it's stupid was also infuriating. If someone tells you to pronounce their name a certain way you do it, asshole.
The other story that stands out to me it The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, the merry fellow whose jacket is sky blue and his boots are yellow. I love Tom Bombadil a lot and it was super fun to read the story in verse, something I'm not used to from more "modern" stories. I liked it.
Thinking about how and in what capacity all of these stories are connected is probably the most intriguing thing to me. As I said, I might reexamine these stories again at one point or another.
