Cute story but just wasn't totally my thing, I kept finding myself going for something else to read. I'll come back to this another time.

One of the best things I've read this year.

When wombat engineer Digger-of-Unnecessarily-Convoluted-Tunnels is magically and rudely transported to an unknown land, she finds herself caught up in strange happenings with stranger people. What's an eternally pragmatic wombat to do when confronted with gods living in statues, prophetic snails, destiny, and a small being that may or may not be a demon? The best she can.

Digger is an epic fantasy of gods and magic. It's also a thoughtful and kind story of decent people doing the best they can to navigate uncertain situations. Fantastic and exciting, philosophical and achingly human, Digger is a remarkable work of graphic storytelling brimming with humor, heart, and a richly detailed world and characters I'm sad to leave behind.

(Since this is probably my 3rd or 4th full read-through, this should not be considered a complete review of all the things I love about Digger.)

I forgot what a fucker Jhalm is. It's depressing that the hard work of so many people is required to keep one asshole in check. The way Murai goes off at the end to keep an eye on him felt bleak this read around, though I guess she's still a teenager and there's a good chance this isn't actually going to be the rest of her life.

I'm less comfortable with the depiction of different kinds of "madness" this read. There's probably a whole essay there, which I am not writing. For ex, having secondhand experience with psychosis, the throwaway bit about the gifted hyena shaman who has issues with wearing clothes and eating regularly isn't amusing.

My 12 year read this book on his own and then wanted to share it, so he read the whole thing aloud to me. How fun to experience these characters together. Love the exasperated, reluctant hero.

Ah, Digger. My first taste of either sea witch or fisher of kings and not soon a taste forgotten. Where else will I laugh at wombats and coo over shadows? There is nothing else quite like you, you beautiful, absurd, unsettling story.
