When I started this one I could not put it down, I read for hours, enthralled by the lyrical prose. It was such great language and a well crafted story.

Awkward Mabel's roommate invites her to stay at their family cottage, make that cottages. They have a lot of them and each family member has one of their own when they are old enough. Mabel comes out of her shell, but at the same time is that truly a good thing? Are the Winslows good people? I liked her mind, but the world is grey, and that is shown.

Her friend Ev is all over the place with her own secrets. The book is about Mabel realizing she is quite alone there. Making her own friends, digging into family archives. Something sinister lies at the bottom of this place. As the story progresses the tone changes in a way, makes the prose haunted and hunted for that matter. And the secrets that unfold, they are quite the secrets indeed. The title fits well too, the end is truly bittersweet.

It's a book you will not be able to put down, and one book that I do recommend you to try.

Extremely entertaining and mostly well done. I only give it four stars though for one tiresome plot device but that didn't stop me from binge reading it! Compulsively readable, best beach read of the summer.

An intriguing story about very naughty rich folks. The writing had some nice moments, especially when describing the lush scenery.

I would call this a fun trashy read - but the writing is far superior to any in your typical trashy novel (though the plot and characters dip close), that I have to just leave it at a fun read. Seriously, this woman can write.

An awkward, to-herself type girl, Mabel, gets placed with a beautiful, rich, and popular roommate, Ev, at school. Through chance they become friends enough that she is invited to summer at the family’s compound in Vermont on Lake Champain. Mabel is very unlikable and without a real self. She spends her time uncovering Ev’s family’s secrets, even while harboring one of her own. I kind of liked the end, because it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, just like the name of the cabin and book.

Started off alright, ended stupid. Ridiculous ending with poor character development and hazy plot lines.

I almost gave up on this book. The first half was so boring. It started to pick up after that. I still didn't love it though. Very convoluted and slightly disturbing. I had higher hopes for this one.
