This was an interesting read!
I like that the author focused on older female serial killers. I had not heard of most of the women in the book.
Some of the details are disturbing but I think that's normal for most true crime stories.
My main take away from the author's perspective was that murders are "just people" there's nothing magical or mythical about someone that kills. Society tried to explain the actions of these killers by turning the women into witches, demons and evil seductresses. Many of the women were just trying to live their lives in a world where they had nothing and were considered nothing.
I also think it's interesting that the author emphasizes how female killers are often forgotten. I think women are confined to specific roles in society, and serial killer is not a role people are comfortable with even more so when it's about a woman. It's funny how many ways women are denied their true identity based on their sex. No she's not a serial killers, she's a witch!

It was interesting to read about a variety of female serial killers from history. I liked how the author brought the characters of these women to life based on historical sources. However, I had hoped for some further reflection on the perception of female serial killers in different times and places, instead of so many details about the murders, since I'm more interested in the psychological and sociological aspects than in the true crime aspect.

I've long said that the reason why more female serial killers don't make the news is because they don't get caught.

Telfer gives you a brief over of the various female serial killers who did caught, and who in some cases might have gotten away with it. In part, this is to show how society functioned and in part it is to show how women worked around society while being bitches.

The book is entertaining It is more of a crime history than a social history. You will either enjoy the writing style or hate it. I enjoyed it. My friend found it strange.

Libro que me ha encantado. A algunas asesinas las conocía, a otras no, y esto me ha hecho querer conocer más de ellas. Además, la autora tiene un toque de humor negro que me encanta

Entertaining with many women killers already know to most true crime addicts, but also a few that are perhaps not so known. The execution of this, is to beat the reader over the head with the fact that women kill too, not just men. Good to familiarize yourself with "new" lady murderers that you might not have heard of.

“Even the most psychopathic woman can realize, when staring death in the eyes, that what she valued, in the end, was life all along.”

This is a difficult book to properly review considering it is nonfiction AND it’s about real serial killers; however, if you enjoy feminist literature and true crime I would totally give it a read. Telfer recounts the events with an unbiased narrative to avoid glamorizing the killers while diving deep into the social and cultural impacts these women have faced before and after their crimes. The writing is accessible and history book-esque with an enjoyably modern twist.

“Lady Killers” is complicated and the discussion of true crime, serial killers, and feminism combined is certainly a nuanced one.
slow-paced

Interesting, but one note.
