Lena's best friend died and took a secret with her. Lena knows what the secret was, but is not telling. As Lena struggles with grief for her best friend and her mom it's clear something sinister is happening to the women in the town.

This is the second book by Paula Hawkins I have read. I think that Paula Hawkins may just not be an author for me. I found there were too many perspectives and I struggled to keep up with the story.

This book was quite confusing in places, and honestly, the multi-perspective style and the constant switch between first- and third-person narratives just didn't compel me to keep reading in places. There is a character list at the front of this book, thankfully. Sometimes, all the different perspectives were too much, although it was a good way to gain insights into all the different suspects and people involved with Nel's murder.

It was quite satisfying to get to the end and find out who was responsible, and it certainly wasn't someone I was expecting, but the style of the book definitely confused matters, and unless you like this kind of style, I wouldn't recommend.

my thoughts are all mumbled from this one wow. I also finished this last night around 3am so I knew I had to sleep on it before I figured it out.

jules returns home to her estranged hometown when her sister mysteriously drowns in the lake. only, this isn’t the first time that a soul has been lost to the lake … and jules’ sister had been writing about that exact same thing. how far will the town go to protect its secrets?

[I’m just gonna bullet out my thoughts because they’re all over the board]

Likes:
- Seeing Nels’ transcripts of the book she was writing was really fun and gave us a good picture in her head.
- The mystery kept unfolding pretty methodically which kept me in a good rhythm while reading.

Dislikes:
- There were so many switching POVs that I literally had a cheat sheet of everyone’s names and relations.
- The ultimate “plot twist” was very obvious to me. I thought about it from the first moment we were introduced to the character what they were capable of.
- I seriously wasn’t rooting for a single character, they were all so nasty and unlikable and not in a love to hate kind of way.

overall, I’m really glad I read this one because of my love for paula’s other books but this one was a pass mostly due to its confusing characters and boring plot lines.
