Not as great as part 1. The cousin duo were still good but this one didn’t feel as organic as the first.

Goosebumps. This is the series that kept me reading through my childhood. More than any other series, Goosebumps kept me interested in reading, and R.L. Stein is a wonderful children's writer. I applaud his efforts, and can't express enough my gratitude for the series.

I really enjoy these scary trips to Egypt with Gabe, his uncle and cousin (even though she is super annoying). Nice build up of drama and suspense, with the expected thrills and scares.

I really loved this book, it felt like a rare Goosebumps book that has a nicely developed plot, some twists along the way, and a nice mix of human plot and supernatural terror. Excellent stuff.

I wasn't a huge fan of most of The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb - it's a book which is largely dull for about two thirds (unless you're really into Egypt and/or mummy's I suppose) and then has quite an exciting final act. I was hardly jazzed about a sequel to this inconsistent book, especially since the main character, Gabe, had a couple of annoying traits last time, like a catchphrase (the word "outstanding") and an inability to tie his shoelaces properly.

Bizarrely, it seems that R.L. Stine wrote Return of the Mummy without consulting his previous book. There is entirely incorrect information (it's mentioned that all the excitement in The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb happened last summer, although it is quite clearly stated in that book that it happens over Christmas), and Gabe has lost both his catchphrase and has since learnt how to tie his shoes. If I thought either of these were deliberate I'd chalk it up to character development, but I'm more inclined to believe that R.L. Stine wrote this with very little consideration for the book that came before.

Gabe and his cousin Sari's rivalry does return, and there are a couple of callbacks which aren't completely terrible, but Return of the Mummy is pretty much more of the same. Which is great if you enjoyed The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, but considerably less great if you thought that book was little more than painfully average. This is now the second time Stine has done a Goosebumps sequel, following Monster Blood II, and both times the follow-up books haven't exactly remained consistent with what was previously established.

Although it doesn't really offer anything different, and none of the characters particularly stand out, Return of the Mummy still isn't completely terrible. Gabe is slightly more tolerable this time, and I did like the character of Uncle Ben. This certainly isn't a great Goosebumps entry, but I suppose it could have been worse.
