3.75 stars. Fun read, and I will definitely be continuing on with the series.

Tchaikovsky is, as always, brilliant. This one is a spsce opera and not free from tropes - ragtag band of good hearted adventurers on the wrong side of the law fall into a set of circumstances bigger than any of them anticipated - but he does it really well and it works. I dropped a star for the narrator - she does a lot of stupid voices that really spoil the text in some areas, especially towards the beginning of the book, and for god's sake, she can't pronounce Hegemony corre to save her life or yours and it's just absolutely killing me. Please, if you ever narrate a book, if you're not absolutely certain of the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word, PLEASE go to dictionary dot com and press the Play button on that word's entry! Practice it a few times. Thirty seconds of effort will spare you the embarrassment of thousands of readers having to listen to you say "heckemony" hundreds of times. I'm praying she received feedback after this one and fixed it for the second one in the series... but I'm not holding my breath.

This book was awesome. It had some crazy ideas, and conjured up some incredible images in my minds eye. The characters were engaging, the story was gripping, the aliens were weird and wonderful, and the world building (or destruction) was epic.

Es de esos libros que puedes decir "me he perdido pero es maravilloso". Me lo recomendaron en la Feria del Libro de Madrid y no había leído a este autor nunca. Sin duda es una sucesión de cosas maravillosas, una tras otra.
