This book was my first time really learning about North Korea, and it was jarring to say the least. Major kudos to the author for being brave enough to tell her story!

I don't think I have the words to articulate the impact of this book, and I don't know if I ever will. Yeonmi Park's story will stay with me for a very long time–likely the rest of my life–and I recommend that everyone read this book.

Beautiful memoir. The trafficking situation in China is absolutely heart shattering and I can’t imagine the amount of people in despair as I write this. NK has always been on my heart since I was at least 12 and the stories of defectors will always inspire me. I thought it was so cool how Yeonmi did a DTS! I hope a door opens in the future for me to help advocate for North Koreans.

I don't think its appropriate as such to give memoirs a rating in particular one of this nature and even though I have rated it 4 stars this is purely based on the readability, knowledge learnt and message conveyed.
Wow what a journey. This has been on my TBR for a while as I have always wanted to learn about what life is like in North Korea and for the North Koreans and it isn't something the rest of the world can gain an accurate insight of. I also became interested in this memoir after seeing Yeonmi's outstanding speech at the One Young World summit. Although Yeonmi did talk a little about the life in North Korea, again she was a child when she left so it wasn't a great picture. However learning about Yeonmi's journey out of North Korea was deeply disturbing and harrowing. This memoir truly made me appreciate the life we have in the western countries and if anything this should be the reason more people read this.
I know there has been some controversy about inconsistencies in her story but in all honesty...who cares. This young lady went through an early life so terribly inhumane and we should be focusing on that. I have utmost respect for Yeonmi and we should be reading more memoirs like this over a lot of the celebrity ones. This is how we can understand the plights of refugees and asylum seekers and hone in to out humanity to provide empathy to others less fortunate, especially when a lot of us live in an entitled world.

Il libro, che ho letto in inglese, mi è sembrato ben scritto e complessivamente mi è piaciuto.
La Park però in alcuni passaggi manca di chiarezza e l’impressione è che ometta alcuni dettagli su cosa sia successo veramente (ammette nei ringraziamenti finali di aver omesso dettagli e sostituito nomi per proteggere delle persone, quindi in effetti torna)
Ad ogni modo Yeonmi Park offre al lettore la possibilità di conoscere la Corea del Nord, come non sarebbe possibile fare senza chi come lei ha lottato per la libertà.
Una storia toccante, di forte impatto e a tratti da far accapponare la pelle, una di quelle storie che anche se si conosce già il finale è sorprendente leggere.
Mi ha tenuta incollata finché non l’ho finito.
