I LITERALLY JUST WROTE A 4 PARAGRAPH REVIEW ON THIS APP AND IT RANDOMLY CLOSED OUT BEFORE I COULD POST IT. so shorter review i guess :(
loved loved loved this book. toltz’ writing was beautiful and i found a lot of it very insightful and relatable, especially regarding parts pertaining to faith and the afterlife. this novel had a slight dystopian aspect to it which was unexpected and very amazing. gracie is my favorite character and she did not deserve her fate.
the main thing keeping this book from being a 5 star read was the part in between the climax and the end. it felt very underdeveloped and generally weaker than the rest of the novel. the climax was insane and very harrowing, the ending was brilliant and i loved it (i genuinely did not expect it to end that way, plus the slight title tie in gave me chills), but the part in between fell flat.
shout out to katy for buddy reading this with me!!!

Laugh out loud funny, and a pretty biting take on humans and our ridiculousness. Loved it.

WHOA. This is not a book for people who want to avoid fiction about the climate crisis, pandemics, or anything about life after death or death or murder or gruesome deaths. Very well written with characters that are complex and well drawn, and the gallows humor made me laugh out loud many, many times in a way that later occurred to me was cathartic.
Had trouble sleeping once I'd finished reading it.
