First of all, let's set expectations. This is not literary fiction. This is like a murder mystery court case book set in the 1700s. Which is fun! But the level of writing is different for each so let's make sure we know what we're getting.
This is a story of an 18th century midwife in remote and rural Maine. It is based on a real midwife who took notes in a journal - notes that included a gruesome rape - which leads to this story. A woman in town is raped by two men. One of the men turns up dead. There's a trial for the remaining man - the town judge. And there's looking into who murdered the other man. But there's a lot of babies being born as well, and town politics and gossip. It's also a stark (and real account) of life for women.
I enjoyed it. But I most enjoyed the midwife's husband, Efraim, a husband who was goals, even if he's an 18th century whittler (I don't remember his job lol). Efraim was so great and I'm a bit in love with him now.
Read this on audio, which was well done.
