"Every man is tiny and comic to his neighbour. And when he seeks an idea of himself he seeks a false idea. No doubt we need these ideas, we may have to live by them, and the last ones that we will abandon are these of dignity, tragedy and redemptive suffering... And indeed our highest moments may find us still the hero of such conceptions. But they are false conceptions all the same."
This is my second novel by Iris Murdoch after The Sea, the Sea, and it blew my mind again. I still have trouble deciphering the meaning behind the plots, but it's such an enjoyable read.
I will definitely be reading more of her books.

A spiraling panic attack of a book, no work of literature since Confederacy of Dunces has gripped me so fiercely, compelling me through hundreds of pages in a single day as I race to see what new emotional catastrophe Bradley is heading towards next. To read and to share.
I've been tricked and I don't even know where it happened. Am I myself a mere fiction of Bradley Pearson, does emotion evoke fiction, always? Every single character is relatable, tragic and ridiculous, it's perfect.
I'm just so confused, this sorcery makes me wonder if I've ever read a book before. Iris, what is this?

Another fast-paced Murdoch banger. As with Hamlet, the book leaves the reader wondering and unable to know who is telling the truth, and if it even matters... the facts that everyone agrees on, admits to, still demonstrate how self-centered and destructivd they all are.
Her ideas about emotional, romantic love in this book make me want to re-read Nuns & Soldiers and see if I interpret that book differently.
I will add that this book includes a moderate amount of discussion of "the purpose" and "the source" of "art," which I felt was ineffective and unclear. But I lowkey think that this discussion is meant to read as garbled and a little nonsensical and the audience is meant go be a little annoyed at the way the characters talk about this topic in their "fake deep" way.
