even the books he writes and that I consider mediocre are damn good

This book really didn’t age well. All of the women are apparently the hottest people on the planet and there are so many pointless extra elements - do we care that he has a kid? What about the result of the case that’s the ‘biggest of his career’? Oh also the KGB is there.
Do yourself a favor and skip this one - pick up another Harlan Coben.

Shitty writing quality. Very short sentences. If I had to read “my sister, Camille” or “my brother in law, Bob” or “my daughter, Cara” one more time I was going to lose it. We know who these people are, you don’t need to keep telling us who they are when we’re almost halfway through the book. I skimmed ahead and noticed he still did that IN THE LAST CHAPTER. Ugh. Also the main character is a prosecutor who had this major rape case he was covering which honestly I don’t think had anything to do with the plot

I love the way Harlan Coben writes, how much personality he infuses into each and every character. Everything is so easy to visualise, you always want to turn the page to find out what’s going to happen next. The way he weaves different storylines together is clever and well executed. But The Woods was “meh” for me. The overall story arch was borderline dull, I didn’t have any “oh my god” moments, the handling of the rape trial felt clumsy at best (although I’ll accept it painted a sad but honest picture of the attitudes towards such cases) and the weird KBG side plot felt completely at odds with the book, it didn’t really serve any purpose.
I saw another review comment on the casual sexism throughout the book and I have to agree. While I’m all for controversial characters and I know that characters opinions don’t necessarily reflect those of the author, this was such subtle casual sexism I’m not convinced it was an intentional character trait / flaw because Paul, the protagonist, is mostly painted as a stand up good guy.
Finding out that the guy accused of the murders was the actual murdered was insanely disappointing. The only reason this gets 3⭐️ is because I enjoy the writing style. The plot was 1⭐️.
