This book was absolutely fantastic.I loved Shazi and Khalid.

"I will live to see tomorrow’s sunset. Make no mistake. I swear I will live to see as many sunsets as it takes.
And I will kill you.
With my own hands. "

Despina and Jalal was for sure two of my favourite charactes.

“I love you, a thousand times over. And I will never apologize for it.”

I can't wait to read the next one.

“I will see you one day, my dearest love. And we will smile and laugh again”

This book is spectacular.

There are not enough words in the world that can convey my praise for Ahdieh. She's created such a remarkable world, filled with characters who transcend the page.

A truly beautiful novel that has brought a breath of fresh air to the young adult genre that I haven't experienced since Maas, Cashore, and Bardugo.

Shazi and Khalid forever ❤️

This book was sooo slow, and while I enjoyed reading about a culture I know very little about, sometimes it did make it a little difficult to follow along. However, the ending got juicy enough that I'm actually very excited to read the second book.

A low 3.5 (3.25?) stars.  I really like Shahrzad but I didn't understand what exactly she liked about Khalid.  It felt like she just randomly liked him out of no where.  When he gave zero reason for her to like him.  I liked the ending so I will continue.

Loved this story. Loved the writing. Loved the intrigue and the character development. However, sometimes I feel like, in service to the poetic nature of the prise, the drama/emotional moments of the story were sacrificed. Or there was too much left unsaid, to the point that it felt lacklustre.

I love the historical accuracy and culture but the main characters tended toward dramatics or emotionless actions.
