I don’t think I would have finished this book if I’d known how little payoff we got in the end. Instead of more being revealed throughout the book, we actually became more disoriented and ended up not even knowing if anything we believed was true. I get enough of that in real life, tyvm.

My heart rate was spiked for two days.

not sticky and anxious enough for me!! need MORE stickiness and anxiety!!!

Okay straight up I need this book to be made into a movie directed by the Safdie Brothers and starring Margaret Qualley. This book was SO stressful. If it weren’t for the immaculate, cataclysmic prose, this could have fooled me into thinking I was reading a witness testimony. Homegirl was DOWN BAD.

Alex is an escort who is all out of options. Cut off from several wealthy old men and banned from multiple establishments, she has completely exhausted her outlets for employment, and at this point, for shelter and companionship, too. Being the absolute agent of chaos that she was apparently born to be, Alex descends into a spiral of bad choices: hopping from one host to another until she screws them over, giving into impulses and sprinkling little lies over all the smoldering hurt she inflicts along the way. It is truly shocking what Alex can make both herself and others believe in order to secure another night of survival.

Cline’s writing took my breath away; she is so good at fabricating an acute sense of dread that does not relent at any point. I’m not even exaggerating, like the audiobook timer was ticking down with 59 seconds left and I was still wringing my hands in desperation because I thought there was no way the story was going to wrap up like this. Overall, this story was a spellbinding trainwreck that I wasn’t able to shift my gaze from until it was fully out of view. If you’ve read this one, I really want to talk about your thoughts on the ending!

FFO: unlikable MCs, hating rich people, White Lotus (the show), Good Time (the movie), Zola (the movie AND the tweet thread), and also Hurricane Girl which I just read last month!
