This was so good! I’m a sucker for commentary on “high society” so of course I was going to enjoy this book. It’s super introspective and the protagonist almost reminds me of the one in My Year of Rest and Relaxation. In fact, I’d say this book has a similar tone to MYORAR, but I found myself more captivated by the premise of this. I’d say if you liked the dreamlike tones of MYORAR or You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine, you might enjoy this book too.

I am afraid this is one way of hitting rock bottom
I really loved the character and whole concept of this story, Alex with her unexplained past, attaching herself to certain men to meet her needs: (food, shelter, pill addiction) , and then that falling through while she's in long Beach, surrounded by wealth and luxuries if you have the connections or know-how to tap into it.
It was fascinating to watch her spend the week using social manipulation but unfortunate to see where that took her. This was her form of survival
The end was unsatisfying, really just felt sorry for the poor girl and afraid of what's to come for her. I would like to see this kind of person some day tap into more stable resources like rehab and housing programs. Girl needs help

I like Cline’s writing. It was easy to digest, light. This is a very dream-like book, where I feel to be floating from page to page scene to scene, so I think the writing is effective in that sense. I’m not sure what to make of the ending and kind of wanted a bit more, but also I understanding why she wrote it in that way.
She captures perfectly a sense of unease all the way through. She turns up the dial when needed. It feels repetitive but not boring - finding patterns and then subverting them in different ways.
As always, the ending was so thrilling and tense. I sped through the end.

I'm not sure if I liked this but I understand why people would. I think my fundamental problem was that i felt there was no point and therefore no stakes. Alex is pretty unlikable and doesn't seem to have a lot of plans/direction/morals but honestly she's not even that bad, she's not like actively malicious or anything. There was an attempt at a conversation about wealth and privilege but it didn't go anywhere either.
