Good book. I thought it was well written and I enjoyed learning about the despotism in the Dominican Republic. It was something I wasn’t familiar with before.

I liked the format of hearing from the different sisters but I’m not sure I thought the tie in to the present was necessary. I kind of would have preferred the ending not been spoiled and wish the suspense would have been allowed to build.

Again, interesting story, well developed characters, and a new setting to me made it an enjoyable read

While I learned so much from this novelization of real events, the story did not draw me in as much as I’d hoped. Moments of beautiful writing and I especially enjoyed getting to know each sister’s distinct personalities, but I think it is the knowing the end at the beginning that left me content but not obsessed with the book. Perhaps this is why it took one month to read — I kept putting it down but it was not begging me to pick it up right away. And after all, maybe that is the beauty of the book? We will see how I feel about it in retrospect.
As for its use in the classroom (this is a new anchor text for 10th), I wonder if this will keep the average 15-year old’s attention.
