I watched Pretty Baby when it came out and was astonished at a lot of what Brooke Shields went through.
With that being said, I started this book thinking there wasn't much I could get from it, but it could still be an enjoyable read.
This book made me reflect on womanhood and the pressures that the patriarchy places on women to be perfect. To read that a woman who seems to "have it all" goes through the same struggles and prejudices as us regular folk was both refreshing and sad.
Highly recommend it.

Well written memoir that brings up interesting talking points about American society’s massive issues around allowing women to age.

Memoir mostly about lessons learned as she ages. Some of this totally non relatable because she’s a famous celebrity but other parts are completely relatable because being a woman has its own set of built-in challenges. Menopause, empty-nesting, keeping marriage vibrant, being a parent of adult children, adult friendships, new jobs and new opportunities, etc. I really liked this book. Brooke Shields might be a celeb, but she’s down-to-earth and aware of her privilege. Women of a certain age will probably like this.

What a delightful surprise. I didn’t know much about Brooke Shields’ life, and expected this to be pretty much a standard biography. Yet it is filled with references to professional research on the evolution of women’s bodies, and how the aging process impacts our lives in culture. This is a tribute to empowerment and feminist ideology.
(The closing focus on Commence felt like a bit of a deviation in tone and infomercial. But I guess it’s a part of her life, and she did stick to the overarching theme of the book. Just didn’t enjoy that in closing.)
