I wouldn't have expected a book of this tiny size originally published in the 1930's to hit me over the head the way that it did..but here we are! This is very clearly a timeless classic that everyone should pick up. It reminds us that our words really do have power and that they always did.

How sad the way history rhymes.

Well, this is incredible. A lightning-quick but absolutely harrowing read, Address Unknown takes the form a series of letters between old friends and business partners Max Eisenstein and Martin Schulse after Martin moves back to Germany in 1932. Max and Martin run a gallery in San Francisco together; Martin once had an affair with Max's sister; Max is Jewish and Martin is not. And Hitler is coming to power.

That Taylor crams a novel's worth of character development and twists into a short epistolary story proves the power of the medium and of her craft. Address Unknown is brutal, effective, clever, and just shockingly prescient. Imagine reading this in 1938! Terrifying. And still terrifying now.

I'm dismayed that I've never read this before. It was a huge hit when first published, and was made into a movie in 1944. But it seems to have faded into obscurity a bit. Obviously, it's time it comes back.

This was so surprising! I was not expecting the turn the letters from these two friends took. It’s quite different from most of the WWII novels I’ve read. It’s short and worth the time!
