Published in 1938, this novella is eerily prescient. Max, a Jew, writes letters to his friend Martin, who has recently returned to Germany. As Hitler begins his rise to power, the relationship between the two friends begins to change. The ending is quite ironic. It is hair-raising to see how easily one's whole worldview can be changed by a charismatic leader.

Had never heard of this book before, but it's scarily relevant. It's also scary how commonplace it felt. The number of people who support a politician that is hostile to a minority group they claim to love, hearing "I love you despite your [race, gender, sexuality, disability, etc] is far to common to me. Would liked to have got more time with the characters, esp before.
