Humans and Orcs are mortal enemies fighting for territory in a dying world when an enemy from across the sea brings them to a fragile alliance. Tara a high ranking orc healer is sent to Callum Battlechild's mercenary company as a sign of the alliance.

I really like the art style of this graphic novel. This book has the first 6 issues of the series. I love the fact that orcs have a civilization and rituals which is not always shown in high fantasy depictions of orcs. There is an interesting cast of characters between the orcs and the humans. The orcs are like the Mongols and the humans are pretty much the same as any in fantasy works. The mercenary group is like any DND group with the vibes and humor. I am looking forward to the next book.

If you like DND and Tolkien style novels, this is the graphic novel for you.

Thank you to Netgalley and IDW Publishing for an eARC of The Hunger and the Dusk.

The Hunger and the Dusk Vol. 1, by G. Willow Wilson and Chris Wildgoose, is a vibrant and pacey graphic novel blending DnD tropes with great character beats. Following the adventures of a tentative human-orc alliance against an invading evil, this story offers a great balance between action, political intrigue and the kind of moving relationships that Wilson specialises in.

I definitely enjoyed this first volume, however I felt that the story was progressing quite slowly and in expected directions. The invading villains clearly have motivations of their own but they’re not explored, characters lash out but don’t always challenge their preconceptions, etc. I have faith these dimensions will be explored in time but I think releasing this ongoing series as standalone arcs (as IDW are) could benefit from more conscious narrative framing for each to offer greater satisfaction from each chunk.

I’m so glad I finally got to read through volume one of this series. It’s just a good fantasy world and the team does an excellent job building up the history in just six issues. Even more than that, I love the characters - from Tara and Callum to Troth and Faran and all of the more minor characters. They all shine in different ways.

The art team on this blew it out of the water with incredible character designs and vibrant world-building. This story feels like it is pacing to be more of an epic fantasy, but with just one volume so far it’s hard to say for sure. I absolutely loved it and if you love fantasy stories and graphic novels, this is one not to miss!
