I've read several DNDesque stories lately. The others that I've read have been interesting twists on the genre. I wish I could say the same for this story. I found the characters to be rather flat; I didn't care about any of them. The story was so whatever. I'm a bit intrigued by what the Vangol's know that the others don't, but not intrigued enough to keep reading.

Humans and Orcs are forced to work together when a new that arrives in their land, the Vangols.

We don't often see Orcs portrayed as having their own culture besides blood thirsty murderers in fantasy stories. But this series is showing us their motivation and lifestyle. The humans are also shown how their lifestyle clashes with the Orcs.

The art is so rich, Humans, Orcs, and Vangols all have distinct looks, and the action is portrayed well on the page.

Looking forward to Vol 2.

2025 Hugo Award finalist - Best Graphic Story or Comic

This Dungeon and Dragons type story has a lot of potential. The artwork by Chris Wildgoose is excellent. I liked the Romeo and Juliet type romantic complications of the human/orc pairing. This first volume, collecting issues #1-6 from 2023-24, serves mostly to set up the premise of a war between the orc-human alliance and the evil Vangol for control of a dying world. Time will only tell if it pays off with a satisfactory ending.
