It was great to see Quasim and Blair finally get together properly and fully officially in this book. It would be wonderful if it was a HEA with them riding into the sunset but with this being Book 2 in a Jahquel J plot trajectory, we know it’s more mother, mayhem and drama. In this book, we finally begin to unpack Elijah’s traumatic history with child abuse and the high level government people implicated in the conspiracy of abuse and exploitation of women and children. It’s not yet all clear but possibly in book 3. The shootout cliffhanger came out of nowhere but did have me side-eyeing Quasim and Quameer who should really have been on their 1s and 2s given the drama and violence they wrought in this book. This was more a 3.5 book for me, good of course because of the author’s pen game, but in parts slightly disconnected- the lover boy/lover girl bits felt disconnected from the shoot-em-up bits which were at times overly complex with too many characters (we possibly need a character chart at this point) and I definitely side-eyed Alaia’s involvement (like since HWENNN??? Too soon for her to have been skilled enough to participate). That said, looking forward to book because we were definitey left hanging off the ledge.
