Not bad for a first book, but not much like Wrede at all.

This was a light, but enjoyable fantasy.

This was a reread. Probably 25+ years but it stuck with me and I still have it so I thought why no give it a go. It’s definitely YA. A good story with good characters that I would have enjoyed more now if all in all it had been much more fleshed out.
It’s got a female lead and passed the Bechdel test for sure. There’s a magic system but it’s never really explained. It’s the first a series apparently so maybe that comes later.
If I had read it now for the first time I would not give it more than 3 stars but the fact that it’s stuck with me for literally decades bumps it up to a 4.5.

Zero spice and absolutely no trigger warnings that I can think to add. A very tame book for a young person just getting into fantasy.

Better than I remembered, glad I bothered to re-read it. I do like Lyra and its peoples.

Yeah, *definitely* early Wrede. I'm glad she developed so much more as a writer and has written so many books I adore. This book, I do not adore. :P Flat characters, ye olde generik fantasie lande setting, simultaneously boring & senseless political machinations... big huge meh. I need to go read the Enchanted Forest Chronicles now or something.

This was a bit of surprise in the monthly free Prime reading. It was a super quick read and was fun and interesting. Races separated and living apart that need to come together to fight a common enemy, will they unite or will pride and history doom them all? Looking forward to the next book in the series.
