This is so cute, and the artwork is perfect. The cat is the best part.

When 13-year-old Moth Hush accidentally does First Magic, her mother confirms that she is a witch! With the help of Mr. Laszlo (the cat) and her mother's diary, Moth learns more about her magic and the history of their town...not all of which is good.

Coming-of-age tale with an endearing main character.

This book weaves a deep backstory in it's short amout of pages. I really enjoyed the plot and character growth.

Loved this! It weaves together many great topics--reckoning with the past and learning to do better in the future, claiming your own identity even when it's not what your parents want you to do, finding a true friend--in a way that feels organic. The drawings are lovely and imaginative, particularly when the book visits Hecate. I really hope there will be more of these. Middle grade graphic novels suffer from an embarrassment of riches, and this is yet another author I'll be adding to my must-read list.

A good execution of "kid learns their magic" trope. As it adds some good plot points to shake it up. Art and mood is great too. I am a little divided on it and if I could rate it from 1-10 I'd give a 7. It could be better.

Art: I really like the art. It's a little on the cartoony side, but it works well. The characters are really expressive and have pretty good designs. The backgrounds are as well. The art gives alot of life to the comic. Also it has a nice fall aesthetic sprinkled in. And there are some slightly creepy moments with the magic. Though, I think the colors of the panels are a little off, they don't seem to work together well imo.

Characters: The main character Moth, is a pretty protagonist. She feels realistic and she's fun to root for. Plus she's pretty likeable. I will also give points to this comic for having a parent with an actual character. I also really like Moth's friend, he's a great member of the supporting cast. The entire supporting cast is pretty strong in general. My one issue is with the antagonists. The main antagonists are cartoonishly evil. Which I guess is fine since the book is aimed at a young audience. But for a slightly new comic it's annoying. They aren't too cartoonishly evil to drag the overall story down in my rating however.

Story: The story is pretty strong until chapter 9, and ends pretty weakly. However i really enjoyed the comic start to finish. But it could use some tweaks.
SPOILERS:

I think the conflict and theme of change was a great plot point to mix up the previously mentioned tropey formula. The conflict with Calendula and the other witches seemed to be a little weak too. Which bugged me. I felt like the theme of change was handled kinda weakly. As they are just proved that yes, change is good and the witches shouldn't hide. I feel like the comic could have expanded on that a little better. But it was handled way better than the other conflict, with the main antagonist which was kinda weakly ended. The antagonist just changed his ways after the fight. But in the end, that's only a nit pick and I did really enjoy this book.
