Felt a little young reader but otherwise found it compelling, well written and with loveable characters.

I truly enjoyed this book. It was a book that was written about an important part of history that you don’t read about often.
Miyoung is a girl with big dreams in a very small rural area in Japanese occupied Northern Korea. She dreams of one day becoming a teacher. When her mother sends her to Japan to live with her sister, Miyoung finds that life is very hard in a country where Koreans are discriminated against. Miyoung decides to pass as Miyoko in order to try to live out her dreams.
This was a great debut book. I loved the end prologue where the author shares that the story is inspired by the life of her own grandmother. This book is written in very simple language. At times it reads like a young adult fiction novel (not a dig). I enjoyed the writing as it made the book very fast paced. So many parts of the book were suspenseful. I couldn’t wait to see what happened. This was an amazing read for my last book of 2024.

I learned more about the Japanese occupation of Korea, but I would have liked to know from the beginning that the story is based on the lives of the author's grandmother and father.
The dialog is lacking and very choppy, especially in the second half of the book. I flipped through the last 25% because her not being with her son was making me too sad lol
The Christian element was encouraging and I'm glad the author included that in her story.
