I loved this book!! So much!! The wholesomeness of found family and sticking up for community made my heart burst. I loves reading through the perspective of a genderqueer person and related to so many experiences they faced in school. I wish I had a group as brave as theirs back in my school days.

This story beautifully depicts the strength that is in found family and community. I now need to see a genderqueer Elphaba in real life pls

Plus with the added plot of musical theatre, this was right up my alley.

I really had to slog through this book. The story was good enough but the audiobook was an absolute pain to listen to. The editing is horrible, I don't know who Bloomsbury hired to do this but probably an unpaid intern judging by the quality. Between the unedited bits of the narrator messing up lines and repeating them, lines repeated before and after chapter breaks, and the horrible quality of ADR that's interspersed, it's a let down. The story is pretty nice but it's so badly recorded than I can't separate the story and the audiobook itself. You would think Bloomsbury has the money to hire a competent editor but they clearly don't care about queer books enough to do their job. I've never listened to a book with errors like this (if at all).

This hit hard. Carey reminded me so much of myself in high school - depressed, scared, feeling everything so deeply, and just trying to sing my way through it. So this was a hard read. But I absolutely loved it. There's so much heart in this novel and its message of not only tolerance but acceptance was wonderful. And I loved the #OwnVoices genderqueer representation - I've been looking for more genderqueer rep and this was a great one to start with!

Warnings: explorations of homophobia and transphobia, anxiety, grandparent loss, references to depression, gender dysphoria and suicidal ideation.

Small complaint: the audiobook's quality is not great. the level's change and the narrator doesn't ennunicate very well so speeding it up just garbles it.

Personally not my thing, but I still think it was objectively good, especially considering this is debut book
