The issue I have with these kinds of self-help/productivity books is that the core is a simple piece of advice, dragged on and repeated for chapters on chapters with different examples of successful people. I agree with the essence of the book, I just expected more tactical recommendations instead of repetitive examples of people who work this way.

Overall a good book. I’m not sure it will convince anyone not open to being persuaded, but it will be motivating for those ready for the message. Newport does fairly acknowledge that some are in positions where their job is essentially the management of “shallow” work. But he also offers tactics to include more deep work and less shallow work. As with all self-help books this is not a book that will change your life. But if it helps anyone do just a little more deep work each day, that alone is a good recommendation. Appropriate for any interested reader. I would particularly recommend it to recent high school graduates or juniors preparing for college and career planning.

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to read more non-fiction and more classics this year. So far, so good.

Update, 2nd read: 3.5-4 stars
Re-read this book and I think that now I was in the right place to read and need this book. I found a lot of useful ideas and tips in here although, as in my first read, I did find it repetitive and having way too many examples. The book could be condensed in 100 pages.
Despite that, this is an important book nowadays and a great aid in my pursuit of a more offline life, digital minimalism and focus on concentration, flow and attention on the things that matter to me.

1st read: 2 stars and found it repetitive

I found this very intriguing. I am a person who struggles to not check notifications of new slack messages etc, so deep work can be hard for me. However, after reading this book, I’ve been convinced to give it more of a go. #workbooks

Important book. Great (even life-altering) ideas and claims. Too long and repetitive.
