The ideas and concepts in this book are sound but it didn’t need to be almost 300 pages. The book provides advice on how to get rid of distractions and maintain focus, how to increase productivity, and how to produce your best work (and in turn feel a sense of meaning), but I found most of the tips to be common sense.

The best and most convincing part of the book though was the author’s rule #3, to quit social media. I think we all know how distracting social media can be but oooh, it is so enticing! And I completely agree with the author that it is a shallow activity yet it is my way to keep up with people’s lives without having to reach out (as an introvert, I love this lol). But as the author asks, is it really that necessary? Most of us are able to maintain active social lives without it. So what’s the point?

Anyways to summarize the book:

- Deep work provides the most value.
- It’s the quality of time, not the quantity of time, that produces results
- Emails and social media are distractions - eliminate these shallow activities
- Plan and execute!

3 stars!

The central idea is solid if not overly groundbreaking, but the purported practical suggestions apply for a tiny fraction of the population (most likely tenure-track academics with no caring responsibilities). I would love to know how many hours of deep and intellectually stimulating work the author's wife is getting while running his household and raising his children for him.

The book is pretentious and frames common sense practices as groundbreaking new information.
