This is the story of twin boys growing up in rural southern Mississippi. Joshua and Christophe are being raised by their blind grandmother. Their mother is in an out a picture. The story starts on the day of their high school graduation. Times are tough and it’s very difficult for them to find jobs after graduation. Joshua finds employment on the docks. Christophe, however, has turned to selling drugs. Ultimately, this book is about the choices the boys make and the consequences of their actions — Kind of a good twin/bad twin fable.

I read this book for my first ever Book Club on Thursday. I am still at a loss if this is the first book or the third book. But at least they are all standalone from what I can tell. I really loved Jesmyn Ward's writing and details of the Gulf Coast. Even in Houston, there are similarities that I can relate to with her descriptions of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi. I really felt like I was there, although, I wouldn't be fishing when the water smells of eggs (H2S eek). I loved how she weaved their stories together told mainly through the twins and also Ma-Mee. It shows the poverty and choices made so beautifully. Christoph's character got a bit whiney in the middle and end. I wanted to smack him. And he only liked Laila, because of Joshua. So, he just seemed petty.

However, she really needs to learn how to transition. Bajeebus. One twin will be talking or thinking or think talking to the other twin and then bam, changes to the other twin. Two sentences went by on multiple occasions where I realized later that it was in the other twin's voice. I would have organized the book with each chapter being a twin's voice or Ma-Mee. And I have to agree with the other reviewers that the middle dragged before we got to the action. The last couple of chapters were so exciting and I actually gasped. Me...I gasped. I can't believe it either. Their fake argument at the end was exactly what they needed to say to each other a long time ago to maybe help with everything.

I wll say that I really enjoyed reading this book and will read another in the series for sure.
