I found this one hard to fully fall in love with until about 2/3 through. I adore Ann Patchett but this one took a while to hook me, but as the characters developed so did my interest. Hostage situation or utopia? Love or Stockholm syndrome? The ending made me gasp. One I'll need to spend a whike processing. If I loved opera maybe I'd give this 5 stars.

The writing was lovely, but the plot was a little dull and plodding.

Bel Canto is a very well written book that moves at a snail's pace. It would be like watching Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel. Watching. Every. Minute. It would have been a very good Reader's Digest article. :-)
