I'm finally at the point where I can sit at a computer and type with minimal pain after a shoulder replacement. I've been reading a lot but was unable to type anything and post it.

McIlvanney actually passed away but Rankin was a huge fan and credits him with inspiring his own writing. Although I haven't read any of the other books by the author, I plan to do so. Countless other Scottish Noir authors credit him as inspiration.

This book introduces the reader to Laidlaw, a rebellious detective who does is own thing and does it spectacularly well. Still he has a less than stellar home life and probably isn't a guy you want to call a friend in many ways. Of course Laidlaw won't care. I really liked this and it has piqued my interest in finding the Laidlaw books.
