It was really well written. The characters were just really annoying most of the time.

DNF 206pgs

With the exception of Kate's story line I wasn't interested enough to keep going.

This is another book that falls under the "I'm Not The Audience For This, But If You Are, You'll Like It" category. I picked it up on a whim after seeing it was Buzzfeed's Book Club choice, despite already having filled my mainstream-wealthy-suburban-fiction quota earlier this year. This claims to be a family saga, and while it does hold up to that (the novel is told from multiple viewpoints, and each family member gets fairly equal space and importance), it doesn't have the epic, generational feel of Pachinko or the engaging character development and plot of Little Fires Everywhere. But if you like either of those two, I think you'd like this.

3.5 stars, rounded down. I felt the first portions of the book drag on, not feeling particularly invested in each of the characters and their respective stories. My thought process was along the lines of "Okay so this is Crazy Rich Asians, but less fun?"

HOWEVER. Towards the end of the book, I was hooked. I could not turn the pages fast enough. Towards the end I was captivated by the drama, and I am very glad I persisted.

I really enjoyed this one. Fans of the Crazy Rich Asians series will love this book, too. Looking forward to reading more books by Kathy Wang.

Beautiful, heart wrenching family portrait

If you read because it helps you understand things about people you didn’t know or hadn’t thought of before, you will love this book. The writing is as natural as water running downhill. Will read anything else by Wang I ever see.

This reminded me a bit of a [b:Crazy Rich Asians|16085481|Crazy Rich Asians (Crazy Rich Asians, #1)|Kevin Kwan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1364852559l/16085481._SY75_.jpg|21571970] set in Silicon Valley, though the main characters are not, in fact, crazy rich, though they do orbit around some of those people.
